Description
Some microstructure features in RBa2Cu3O7-x ceramics, where R includes La, Y, Eu, and Tl, are shown. There are 7 kinds of twin boundaries, 110, 001, 031, 032, 101, 301, and 302 as revealed in the electron microscopy studies. Previous investigations showed that twinning provided pinning centers for high Jc, critical current density. This study shows that the continuity of O1-Cu1-O1 chains at twin boundaries should be responsible for high Jc. Other kinds of grain boundaries may be obstacles for high Jc except coherent grain boundaries. Some of them could keep the continuity of O1-Cu1-O1 chains at one dimension. The grain boundaries with second phase are always obstacles for high Jc. The Jc can be linked with microstructure features such as grain size distribution, grain boundary phases and their quantities, porosity, shape of grains, impurity phases and their quantities. 7 refs
