Canadian radiology in the age of artificial intelligence: a golden opportunity

Description

Artificial intelligence (AI) will revolutionize radiology in Canada and abroad. Artificial intelligence is capable of accomplishing specific imaging-related tasks. Examples include the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) pediatric bone age and intracranial hemorrhage challenges in which AI successfully established bone age using hand radiographs and classified types of intracranial hemorrhage on head computed tomography examinations. Artificial intelligence can be used to triage imaging examinations by populating worklists so those with more urgent findings are reported sooner and has been applied to image reconstruction to minimize radiation while maintaining diagnostic quality.These studies and others demonstrate the potential of AI, which will likely lead to improved radiologist performance by improving report quality, report turnaround time, and radiologist productivity. With an educated and diverse population, and universal health care, Canada is well positioned to be a leader of medical imaging-related AI research and implementation. The realization of the full potential of AI in radiology will however depend on advancements on several fronts. (author)
