view Abstract Citations (27) References (30) Co-Reads Similar Papers Volume Content Graphics Metrics Export Citation NASA/ADS Blue Condensations Associated with Elliptical and so Galaxies Stockton, Alan Abstract Spectroscopic observations have been obtained for a number of systems for which one or more faint blue knots are found in the vicinity of an elliptical or SO galaxy. Of particular interest are NGC 3561 and IC 1182, which have luminous bridges connecting the galaxies and the blue knots. The spectra of the blue knots show emission lines characteristic of moderate-excitation H ii regions, and the continuum radiation is dominated by light from early-type stars. The available observational evidence suggests that these emission knots, with dimensions of 2-3 kpc and absolute magnitudes of -16 to -17, have recently condensed from the gaseous medium surrounding the galaxies with which they are associated.
