Description

The x-ray induced photoemission from clean pure plutonium metal is described and the results for both core and valence levels are compared with previous measurements on light actinides. It is found that, as in thorium and urnaium, the configuration interaction plays an important role for core levels, in particular for those of the n=5 shell. The experimental valence-band spectrum confirms the existence of 5f states at the Fermi level and is compared with a density of states of FCC Pu derived from a recent relativistic band structure calculation.
