Nuclear waste: a new approach

The author discusses the advantages of the utilization of monitored retrievable storage as the nuclear industry proceeds carefully toward a permanent repository. Such a two-track approach, he suggests, will commit the industry to longer surveillance over high-level wastes, but this will give the industry more time to identify and correct mistakes. He goes on to discuss the implications as well as the implementation of this shift in emphasis in the waste program, organizationally and technologically, and the safety and security it affords toward the long-term storage of nuclear waste
