Description

The role of the Coulomb interaction between the delta and the residual nucleus in resonant-energy pion-nucleus elastic scattering is investigated using the mean-spectral approximation. The differential cross sections for elastic scattering of π+ and π- from 40Ca at 180 MeV clearly demonstrate the necessity of including this Coulomb interaction into the theory. The interplay between Coulomb and the strong delta-nucleus interaction is used to extract a value of the real part of the delta-nucleus potential. (orig.)
