Description

Since 1982, Japanese utility companies (Kansai Electric Power Co., Japan Atomic Power Co., Kyushu Electric Power Co., Shikoku Electric Power Co., and Hokkaido Electric Power Co.), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd (MHI) and Westinghouse Electric Corporation (WH) jointly have been conducting the APWR Development Program. The main objective of this program is to establish a nuclear power plant design which will satisfy the future needs in Japan for the 1990's and beyond, by integrating the improved technologies of conventional PWRs, which have been confirmed through operating experience, with the advanced design concepts and technologies which are being developed in this program. The APWR incorporates innovative features in all aspects of nuclear power plant design, including major components, fluid systems, control and protection systems, radioactive waste management and plant arrangement.
