Do renewable sources of energy exist? can the energy transition be steered?

  • 1. i3-CRG, Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau (France)

Description

References are often made to the 'sector of renewable energies' when talking about the energy transition. This article focuses on the difficulty of defining this sector, given its heterogeneity, and on its institutional construction around a meta-organization: the Syndicate of renewable energies. Wittgenstein's concept of language-game is used to analyze this construction. The 'sector of renewable energies' appears to have been built as a result of a consensus between 3 language-games: state's energy policy, environmental activism and the development of an innovative industrial sector. The crisis of photovoltaic in France is reviewed to shed light on the difficulty of steering the energy transition
