NaCl single crystal destruction caused by low-energy electrons

Description

Results are presented of mass-spectrometric study of destruction of NaCl crystals, pure and doped by hydroxyl ions OH- and oxygen ions O--, under the effect of electron bombardment. The sputtering intensity was studied versus the electron beam current density and crystal temperature. The samples were irradiated by a 0.5-3.0 keV beam. The beam current density varied from 1.0x10-2 to 5.0 A/m2. Experiments on separation of the radiolysis products from the crystals preliminarily exposed to γ-radiation (absorbed dose D=107 rad) have been performed also in the process of crystal thermal annealing. It is shown that the most intensive separation of components is observed from the oxygen-doped crystals. The intensity of radiolysis product release strongly depends on the current density of the electron beam. At low current densities and relatively low temperatures the separation has a pulse character. The process activation energies are determined
