Oil adhesion testing - recent results

Description

Oil adhesion and its influence on the penetration of oil into shoreline sediments, was discussed. Oil adhesion was defined as the mass of oil per unit area remaining on a standard test surface after a defined time, under prescribed conditions. Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of different surface materials on adhesion measurements. Stainless steel, glass, plastic, Teflon, wood and ceramic were tested with five different oils. Rods, needles or sticks of these materials were dipped into oil and then allowed to drain for 30 minutes. The mass of the oil left on the rods and their surface area were used to calculate the adhesion value. Results showed that the relative order of adhesiveness of different oils was independent of the type of material used for the test surface. 2 refs., 2 tabs., 30 figs
