Description

Full text: We report on the first experiments using neutron-rich radioactive ion beams (RIBs) from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge. HRIBF is the only ISOL facility in the US, and the only facility in the world capable of producing post-accelerated n-rich RIBs. It is now capable of accelerating over 100 beams with intensities greater than 1000 ions/sec. The availability of these n-rich beams plus a world-class suite of instruments optimized for RIB science has allow us to achieve some notable successes. We report on Coulomb excitation measurements of B(E2; 0+- +) in the mass 130 (126, 128 Sn and 132, 134, 136 Te,) and in the mass 80 (78, 80 Ge). We have proven the feasibility of using fusion-evaporation reactions of RIBs on light targets to study evaporation residues with gamma gamma recoil coincidence spectroscopy. In another experiment, the inverse kinematics transfer reaction 9 Be(134 Te, 8 Be) at 4 MeV per nucleon was used to identify single neutron states in 135 Te. This talk will provide an overview of some of the recent exciting physics done with radioactive beams at HRIBF and briefly will discuss possible future upgrades of HRIBF. (Author)
