The Remote Volume Reduction Machine for Cutting a Channel Box for a BWR Fuel Assembly - 18517

Description

Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. installed remote volume reduction machine made by Kobe Steel, Ltd. (KSL) for cutting a channel box (CB) in order to utilize the site-bunker pool efficiently for high dose radioactive waste. We selected the straw-cutting method for this machine. This cutting method is a machinery cutting method based on embrittlement characteristic. This method enables us to decrease the amount of secondary waste from the cutting process. By using this machine, we succeeded in cutting approximately 800 pieces of CBs safely and without any trouble for 5 years and contributed to keeping more space in the site-bunker pool. (authors)
