Description

A spectrophotometric method, circumventing interference from F- ions, during estimation of Zr in U-Zr alloy fuel, has been developed. F- ions from added HF, for quantitative dissolution of metallic fuels, were converted to a strong ionic liquid complex using a cocktail of masking agents. Zr(IV) complexed with Xylenol Orange, displayed enhanced sensitivity below 1 μg/mL, in acetate buffer medium with masking agents, when F- was ≥ 5 μg/mL. Validation and standardization of the method has been accomplished, using arc melted and injection casted samples of U-Zr alloys, respectively. Prevention of interference from F- by masking agents was elucidated using density functional theory. (author)
