Quadrupole moment effects in 7Li elastic scattering

Description

The differential cross sections for scattering of 99 MeV 7Li ions from targets of 12C and 58Ni were measured at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility. The cross sections for the elastic and inelastic scattering from the first excited state of 7Li on 12C were obtained over an angular range of 6.50 to 530 (LAB) in steps of approx.10. The cross sections were measured for the same states for 58Ni over a range of 6.50 to 57.20 (LAB) in approx.10 steps. The cross sections ranged over seven to eight orders of magnitude, being largest at the forward angles and with superimposed oscillations for angles out to approx.500. Optical model analyses with Woods-Saxon form factors were performed and compared to the 6Li scattering from the same targets at the same energy by Schwandt et al. The 58Ni data can be fit quite well with only small adjustments to the 6Li nickel parameters, while the 12C data required a Woods-Saxon squared shape in order to produce a reasonable fit. These 7Li scattering data have also been analyzed with a double-folding real potential which employs the nucleon-nucleon potential of Bertsch et al
