Problems with the concept of the inflationary Universe

Description
Assumptions inherent in inflationary Universe models are examined. Attention is given to possible configurations for the energy momentum tensor to quantify the energy difference between high temperature (symmetric) and the unsymmetric lower temperature phases of the Universe. The phase transition has a structure determined from an effective potential associated with quantum alterations during symmetry breaking. However, a convex effective potential would not have a double-cell structure defined in inflationary models. Use of an effective potential to describe the phase structure in an early inflationary Universe is concluded to result in an invalid model. 9 references
