Perspective production of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceutical in divisions of IPPE

  • 1. Institute of Physics and Power Engineering, Obninsk (Russian Federation)

Description

Currently, 48 radioisotopes are manufactured in the Institute of Nuclear Power Engineering (IPPE). The profile of production is based on the possibilities of the irradiation base and the need of medicine. In IPPE, much research concerning these issues is being conducted. These are based on the technology off I-125 and Pd-103 (which are obtained from alpha emitters); Th-229; generation of Th-229 and Ac-225; creation of Ac-225 - Bi-213; and production of the closed gamma source. The reactors that are being used for irradiation of targets are: (1) A reactor AM (the first NPP): thermal rating up to 10 MW, stream of thermal neutrons up to 4x1013 n/cm2.s, in a period of maintenance until the year 2004. (2) A reactor BR-10: thermal rating up to 6 MW, stream fast neutrons up to 8.6x1014 n/cm2.s in a period of maintenance until the year 2002. The questions of why the construction of these replacements for the existing reactors and the possibility of its usage for the irradiation of targets of indirect reactors are being considered.
