Description

Development of a 12.5 J pulse energy long pulse Nd:YAG laser system for welding of Iodine brachytherapy sources has been carried out. It includes development of a compact fiber coupled long pulse Nd:YAG laser with dual port fiber optic beam delivery, a laser welding workstation, and a CCD camera based online weld monitoring set up for control on laser welding process. Laser welding parameters have also been optimized for leak tight welding of miniature titanium encapsulation of 125I brachytherapy sources. These tiny sealed brachytherapy sources are used for treatment of eye and prostate cancer in India. (author)
