Description
Whereas the notion of symmetry and therefore the notion of symmetry group have been playing an increasing role in physics (understanding of nature basic rules, building up of the standard model for elementary particles, theory of phase transitions), this book first proposes a general introduction to group theory (discrete, Abelian, symmetric groups). The author precisely describes some groups among the most used ones in physics (SO(3) rotation group, SU(N) standard model groups). He reviews some important applications such as conservation laws resulting from symmetries (Noether theorem), or discrete or continuous symmetry breakages in the phase transition theory
