Description
A new approach to the removal of sludge and corrosion products from steam generator tube surfaces and crevices is described. It combines the mechanical pressure pulse cleaning process with chemical cleaning by solvents. The pressure pulses introduce nitrogen into the steam generator every 10 sec during the entire chemical cleaning fill, hold and drain cycles. The process, called Chemically Enhanced Pressure Pulse Cleaning improves cleaning and reduces the corrosive effects of solvents on steam generator components by a factor of two to four. It has been successfully applied at Virginia Power's Surry 1 and 2 PWR plants in the USA. Deposits totalling 38,000 lbs were removed and the success of the operation was confirmed by extensive video inspection. (UK)
