Optical polarization in the bipolar nebula S 106: evidence for a central illuminating source

Description
An optical linear polarization map is presented for S 106, a compact H II region with a bipolar appearance. The measurements confirm that light is scattered within the bright southern lobe. The source of illumination is found to coincide with a strong infrared point source, located in the central dust lane of the nebula, which has recently been proposed as the object responsible for exciting S 106.
