Development of non-destructive assay system to measure Pu inventory in glove boxes for MOX Handling Facility

Description

In a MOX handling facility, a quantitative measurement of Pu mass in glove boxes is essential because all nuclear material are handled in a bulk form in glove boxes. Therefore, in order to establish a measure which allows effective measurement and verification for the Pu inventory in glove boxes, a nondestructive assay equipment (GUAM: Glovebox Unattended Assay and Monitoring system) should be developed with considering the minimization of personnel exposures during the measurement period. Detectors of GUAM are fixed on the glove boxes and GUAM can be utilized as one of measures (e.g. Process monitoring equipment) which enables non-quantitative evaluation for safeguarding a large-scale MOX handling facility. This report describes the design concept and the possibility of GUAM for safeguarding a large-scale MOX handling facility. (author)
