Automated detection method of departure and arrival time of railway vehicles using acceleration signal

  • 1. Railroad Safety Research Team, Korea Railroad Research Institute, Uiwang (Korea, Republic of)

Description

It is necessary to monitor overall environments of railway vehicle and station in a metro, which is a typical public means of transportation for many passengers in metropolitan area. To make it work, the railway operation companies try to increase internal environment monitoring of railway vehicles, due to regulatory laws. In order to increase effectiveness, a system to monitor internal environment of railway vehicles using the internet of things in real time is recently developed. However, urban railway, which includes many stations, requires management of various monitoring data, while the absence of automatic detection technology for departure and arrival times leads to a decline in efficiency of the monitoring system. Hence, a new methodology for automatic detection of departure and arrival times is proposed in this study. The method uses signal processing of acceleration signals from railway vehicle based on an accelerometer, which can be added to the monitoring system. From a field test for commercial metro line 1 in Seoul metropolitan area, it is confirmed that the information on departure and arrival times can be automatically distinguished, with errors in range of 1 to 2 seconds when compared to the exact time during the testing. As a future development, efficiency of data management system is expected to improve with the application of the proposed algorithm to various monitoring systems in railway vehicles
