Operating nuclear power plants generate various types of solid, liquid, and gaseous waste containing radioactive materials. The quantity and form of these waste varies greatly between plants and is generally a function of the type of plant, and the management philosophy and processing concepts employed. This chapter focuses on the various types of waste generated within the power plants, the principle processing technologies deployed for each, the major waste management/volume reduction techniques utilized, and the packaging of the final waste forms for transporting and disposal
