Uniform treatment of the first and the second emission continua of rare gases

Description

A system of kinetic equations that enable to calculate time-dependent fluorescence spectra of rare gas excimers has been composed and solved. To this end, correctly normalized Franck-Condon factors corresponding to all possible bound-bound and bound-free transitions for Xe excimers in their lowest dipole allowed electronic state have been calculated. Thereafter, the Franck-Condon factors have been summed using their calculated relative statistical weights. As a result, a uniform interpretation to the well-known emission continua has been given, including weak oscillatory structures related to the excimers' left turning point regions. Good agreement between theory and experiment has been demonstrated. A similar approach has been used to calculate time-resolved luminescence spectra for self-trapped excitons in Xe crystal
