Advanced forward calorimetry for present and future colliders

Description

We propose to develop a compact, high density calorimeter to instrument the very forward region. The design is based on a warm liquid medium such as tetramethylpentane (TMP) or neopentane which is better suited to the expected high background conditions than conventional gas media. The calorimeter will be assembled in sealed units, which can then be placed compactly into a variety of configurations. The accompanying hybrid electronic readout is designed to operate at either 100 MHz or 1 GHz, depending on the specific collider application (Tevatron or SSC)
