Description
An improved PWR gadolinia assembly design achieves a significant reduction in absorber residual by using gadolinia enriched to nearly 100% in Gd-157. The improved design also achieves a significant reduction in peak pin power density by moving two-thirds of the gadolinia pins to the assembly periphery and by displacing the water in the control rod guide tubes in the first cycle of residence with inexpensive, reusable Zircaloy rods. Two enriched gadolinia loadings are used: a lower loading at the periphery of the assembly and a high loading in the interior of the assembly
