MRT of the hand in chronic polyarthritis

Description

Forty hands of 39 patients with rheumatic joint disease were examined by MRT. The method differentiates between inflammatory exsudative and proliferative processes in soft tissues and bone. T2-weighted images provided criteria for judging the activity of the disease. MRT provided better demonstration of the soft tissues than just conventional radiography. The methods were of equal value for showing bone lesions. MRT is suitable as a means of diagnosing rheumatoid changes in the hand. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

40 Haende von 39 Patienten mit rheumatischen Gelenkerkrankungen wurden mit der MR-Tomographie untersucht. Die MR-Tomographie erlaubte eine differenzierte Beurteilung der entzuendlichen Exsudations- und Proliferationsprozesse im Weichteil- und Knochengewebe. Anhand der T2-gewichteten Aufnahmen ergaben sich Kriterien zur Abschaetzung der Entzuendungsaktivitaet. Die MR-Tomographie zeigte im Vergleich zu Roentgenuebersichtsaufnahmen eine ueberlegene Darstellung der Weichteilbefunde. Die Nachweisrate von Knochenmanifestationen lag bei beiden Verfahren in gleicher Groessenordnung. Die MR-Tomographie eignet sich zur Diagnostik rheumatischer Gelenkerkrankungen der Hand. (orig.)
