Description

Continuing a series of papers on nuclear power plants of the 4th Generation initiated by the journal Energia Nucleara, the present article deals with the evolution of the graphite moderated reactor and helium cooled High Temperature Reactor (HTR) towards Very High Temperature Reactors (VHTR). The article will contain two parts. Within the first part the following issues are presented: the evolution along more than 60 years of these systems, basic data regarding the seven reactors and the nuclear power plants (NPP) which were built and operated or still in operation, the main current projects of the modular systems with master units concerning the fuel, and the core of HTR reactors. Within this article's first part, out of imposed requirements for the generation IV NPP (sustainable development, economic performances, security, reliability, proliferation resistance and physical protection), only the aspects connected to security and reliability are thoroughly analyzed.
