Testing of a graphite based extinguishing powder for use on liquid metal fires

Description

A graphite based extinguishing powder, newly developed by a French firm for use on liquid metal fires has been tested on a sodium fire in a pan of 0.96 m2 using 60 kg of sodium. The behaviour and extinguishing power are reported and compared with those of other materials tested in earlier experiments. The new powder has excellent efficiency in dealing with sodium pool fires. Application is simple. The amount required is more than an order magnitude less than that of currently available alternatives. The powder is not corrosive. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Ein auf der Basis von Graphit aufgebautes, von einer franzoesischen Firma neu entwickeltes Loeschpulver fuer Fluessigmetallbraende, wurde an einem Natriumflaechenbrand in einer Versuchswanne mit einer Flaeche von 0,96 m2 mit einer Natriummenge von 60 kg erprobt. Verhalten und Loeschwirkung werden geschildert und mit denen anderer Mittel, die in frueheren Versuchen getestet wurden, verglichen. Dieses neue Loeschpulver hat bei Natriumflaechenbraenden hervorragende Loeschwirkung. Die Handhabung ist einfach. Die zur Erzielung einer Loeschwirkung benoetigte Menge ist um mehr als eine Groessenordnung geringer, als die Menge der z.Zt. zur Verfuegung stehenden Loeschpulver. Das Loeschpulver ist nicht aggressiv. (orig.)
