Photons and neutral mesons in relativistic heavy ion collisions: First results with TAPS
Description
First results obtained with the Two-Arm Photon-Spectrometer TAPS and relativistic heavy ion beams at SIS/GSI are presented. Two different types of experiments are discussed. In a first series of experiments the authors have studied neutral meson production (π0,η) as a probe of the reaction dynamics. For the first time, sub-threshold η production was observed in heavy ion collisions. In peripheral interactions, Coulomb excitation of 2-phonon giant dipole resonance in 208Pb was observed
