Transmutation of long-lived fission products in a large lead block

Description

The ARC method (Adiabatic Resonance Crossing) can be applied to improve the long-life fission products transmutation efficiency, alternative solution to the underground disposal of nuclear wastes. The neutronic behaviour study in medium adapted to this method, has been realised at the CERN during the TARC experiment, with a pure lead block of 334 tons. Experimental results allowed the validation of the Monte Carlo type simulation, developed by Rubbia et al concerning the neutronic behaviour. (A.L.B.)
