Anthracene based fluorescent probe as ion sensor

  • 1. Photochemistry Research Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli (India)

Description

Schiff bases are renowned class of organic compounds, known for its ease of preparation via condensation of primary amines with ketones or aldehydes under specific conditions resulted in formation of azomethine group (-CH=N), serve for various applications such as sensing, catalyst as well as hugely responsible for distinct biological properties. Owing to the biological and environmental importance of metal ions, various detection techniques have been developed. Among the available methods, fluorescent based technique is predominantly attractive in terms of selectivity, sensitivity and response time. Fluorescent based chemical sensors are miniaturized devices which can deliver real time information on the presence of specific compounds or ions in even complex samples. Schiff bases are attractive fluorescent chemosensors, since they exhibit excellent ligand properties, which enable simple and inexpensive determinations of various metal ions. In our study, a new anthracence based Schiff base has been synthesized via condensation and characterized using UV-Vis, Fluorescence, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and Mass spectroscopic techniques. The molecular probe was utilized for sensing cations and anions using fluorescence technique
