Study of radiation safety for industrial radiography practice using Ir-192 and Se-75 in polytechnic

Description

According to the Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 10 of 1997 concerning Nuclear Power, it is stated that one type of use of nuclear power is radiography with gamma radiation sources. Industrial radiography activities are implemented not only in industrial environments, but also for education and training, including in polytechnic. Safety aspect of industrial radiography practice become a serious concern because it has radiation hazards potential to workers, society and the environment. In this paper, the study will be focused on determination of work area for industrial radiography practices using Iridium-192 and Selenium-75 sources at the polytechnic in accordance with work safety standards. The work area consists of the radiation workers area, education and training participants area, and the society area. The calculation results for the safe distance using the source Ir-192 (activity 22.1 Ci) is 140.67 m for radiation workers, 74.14 m for training participants, and 574.28 m for the community. Whereas for Se-75 (activity 16 Ci), the safe distance for radiation workers, training participants, and the community are 77.86 m, 41.04 m and 317.86 m, respectively. Based on these results, industrial radiography activities at polytechnics require a very large area. To reduce the area, collimator can be used as a shielding of radiation. (author)
