ATHLET-CD and COCOSYS: the mechanistic computer codes of GRS for simulating severe accidents

Description
Simulating accident sequences within the framework of safety analyses of nuclear power plants requires the use of deterministic computer codes furnishing the most realistic results (best estimates) in the light of the state of the art. This requirement exists for design basis accidents as well as accidents and events exceeding the design basis. For simulations of reactor behavior and of the source term from the nuclear steam supply system, the ATHLET (Analysis of Thermohydraulics of Leaks and Transients) code has been developed and validated for transients and accidents without major core damage, and the ATHLET-CD (Core Degradation) code has been developed and validated for accidents resulting in major core damage, while the COCOSYS (Containment Code System) code has been developed and validated for the behavior of the containment and the source term for the environment. Abstract (German)
Zur Simulation von Stoerfallablaeufen im Rahmen von Sicherheitsanalysen fuer Kernkraftwerke wird gefordert, deterministische Rechenprogramme einzusetzen, die nach Stand von Wissenschaft und Technik moeglichst realistische Ergebnisse ('best estimate') liefern. Diese Forderung wird sowohl fuer Auslegungsstoerfaelle als auch fuer auslegungsueberschreitende Stoer- und Unfaelle erhoben. Dabei stehen die Beherrschung von Stoerfaellen, die Wirksamkeit von Massnahmen des anlageninternen Notfallschutzes bezueglich des Anlagenverhaltens und Quelltermrechnungen im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Fuer die Simulation des Reaktorverhaltens und des Quellterms aus dem nuklearen Dampferzeugungssystem werden die Rechenprogramme ATHLET (Analyse der Thermohydraulik von Lecks und Transienten) fuer Transienten und Stoerfaelle ohne wesentliche Kernschaeden und ATHLET-CD (Core Degradation) fuer Stoerfaelle mit schweren Kernschaeden entwickelt und validiert, fuer das Verhalten des Sicherheitseinschlusses (Containment) und den Quellterm an die Umgebung das Rechenprogramm COCOSYS (Containment Code-System).
