Polarization of atoms and nuclei in foil collisions

Creators

Description

Some preliminary steps to produce a beam of polarized heavy nuclei at Tandem acclerator energies (approx.10 MeV) and currents (approx. 0.2 pamp.) are discussed in this brief progress report. It is meant only as an introduction to the subject and literature. Since in a Tandem accelerator the beam normally passes through a charge-exchange carbon foil (approx. 10μ g/cm), the method of ion beam collision through tilted foils is examined as a possible means of beam polarization; however, at this early stage, the main emphasis in this note will relate to atomic polarization rather than the later transfer processes of this polarization to the nucleus.
