Description
Two-dimensional simulations of beam-target experiments which are presently performed with the GSI-RFQ facility are discussed. The targets considered are gas tubes and thin metallic foils, irradiated by 45 keV/u krypton ions. Those experiments allow for the investigation of plasmas created by heavy-ion beams, of the energy deposition mechanism in hot matter, of shock propagation and of radiation emission. The numerical code used to perform the hydrodynamical calculations includes a realistic equation of state, transport coefficients, energy deposition by heavy ions and radiation cooling in the emission limit.
