Use of rotating-phase DANTE pulses for in vivo proton NMR spectral editing with a single irradiation facility

Description
Lactate measurements in living tissue such as skeletal and heart muscles are hindered by the fact that the quadruplet arising from the CH group is hidden by the water resonance (or suppressed together with it), and its CH3 doublet is often dominated by large overlapping signals from lipids. Recently a gated-Dante sequence has been reported which is effective in achieving both water and lipid suppression. The authors report here a modification of this sequence which uses the properties of a rotating phase DANTE pulse and allows also spectral editing, requiring only the usual transmitter channel. Figures are presented of the kinetics of lactose formation in isolated perfused rat heart during two successive periods of global total ischaemia, obtained by this method. (U.K.)
