Description

A passive containment cooling system (PCCS) is a promising concept to improve the reliability of removing the decay heat following an accident. Toshiba has conducted a PCCS development test program in order to demonstrate the technical feasibility of the PCCS and to provide a database to develop an analytical model for the PCCS heat removal performance estimation. This paper describes the calculation model for the PCCS performance analysis using a best estimate thermal-hydraulic code TRAC and its qualification against the system integral tests conduced at an integral system test facility, GIRAFFE. The comparisons between the GIRAFFE test result and the TRAC calculation result show that the TRAC model can satisfactorily predict the major phenomena governing the system response and the PCCS performance which were identified in the GIRAFFE tests.
