chemical studies related to redox processes in uranium - cerium separation
Description
reprocessing of the burnt fuel is generally carried ou by the purex process. purex process is a continuous solvent extraction process commonly used for the separation of uranium and plutonium from fission products and their separation from each other. this method is based on the separation of uranium and plutonium from irradiated nuclear fuel nitrate solution by extraction with tributylphosphate (TBP) in kerosene . the separation of uranium from plutonium is based on the reduction of Pu(IV) to Pu(III) which is transferred to the aqueous phase while U(VI) remains in the organic solvent.in this thesis, cerium is used as a simulant for plutonium in the trivalent and tetravalent states. this work has been carried out to investigate cerium-uranium separation by chemical studies related to redox process of cerium from TBP-kerosene solution using different reducing agents . the stabilization of cerium (IV) in nitric acid medium using two different stabilizing agents, namely, sulphamic acid and sodium bromate were separately investigated. in this concern, parameters affecting this process were investigated
