Magnetic field considerations for low-voltage grounding
Description
Presentations and discussions at the Electric Power Research Institute workshop on magnetic fields associated with low voltage grounding are summarized. The objectives of the workshop were to provide a forum for discussion of why existing grounding practices have been adopted and what constraints must be observed in considering revisions to current practice. Concepts for alternate designs that would reduce ground currents and their associated magnetic fields were also explored. The major topics discussed at the workshop included health effects of magnetic fields, measurements of ground current magnetic fields, alternate grounding designs, and the recommendations on grounding practices in the US National Electrical Code. Comments were made on the effects of ground currents on the installations of water, gas, and telecommunications utilities. Recommendations are made regarding grounding practices and research that needs to be conducted
