Description

Complete text of publication follows. It is well established that certain types of chemical reactions, subject to appropriate conditions, organize themselves spontaneously to give rise to regular spatial patterns or to periodic rate fluctuations. In this work, the effects of non-aqueous solvents, non-ionic, cationic, and anionic surfactants, complexing agents, and organic base on the behavior of the 1, 10 phenanthroline chemiluminescence (CL) oscillating system were investigated. Oscillating CL produced by the addition of 1,10-phenanthroline to the oscillating system H2O2-KSCN-CuSO4-NaOH was investigated using luminometry method in a batch reactor. In the presence of solvent with high basicity compare to water, tetrahydrofuran (THF), the CL intensity was increased (11 fold), the light emitting and oscillating time was enhanced by 2-fold. In addition, the effect of surfactant, in the concentration range of 0.3-1.5 m/v, on oscillatory system was investigated. Non-ionic and anionic surfactants including triton X-100, triton X-114, brij 35 and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) increased the intensity of the oscillating CL reaction by 32, 5, 10 and 6-folds, respectively. The effects of complexing agents including such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and triethylenetetraamine (TETA) on oscillating CL system were investigated. The oscillating CL with organic base was also studied. Results indicated that using tetramethylammonium hydroxide, TMAOH, causes regular oscillating CL with nearly the same oscillating period compare to NaOH.
