Separation of Eu3+ and Am3+ by wood as a natural resin

  • 1. Nuclear chemistry department, Hot Labs. Center, Atomic Energy Authority, Cairo (Egypt)

Description

Eu and Am are two important elements present radioactive wastes of nuclear reactors. Separation of both elements from each other at same oxidation state is a difficult problem due to similarity in their chemical and physical characteristics. The aim of this work is to study the sorption/desorption behavior of both elements in nitrate medium on wood powder as a natural resin. Different types of wood were examined and different parameters affecting both processes were investigated. The results of this work showed that more than 80% of both elements are taken up by wood. In desorption process for the contaminated wood, partial separation of the two elements in a mixture of them could be achieved under certain conditions. Eu3+ was found to be much more easily leach able from wood than Am3+. 5 figs
