Carbon isotope composition and its variation of particulate organic matter in river waters from the Kuzuryu river system

Description
The carbon isotope compositions of organic matters (δ13C, Δ14C) are effective tracers for investigating the dynamics of organic matters in the aquatic environment. In this study, the authors collected 85 to 141 liters of river water from the Kuzuryu River main stream located in Fukui and Gifu prefectures and the downstream of the Hino River, major tributary of the Kuzuryu River, at one point each, four times during the period from June to October 2010. They separated suspended particles using a continuous centrifuge, and measured δ13C and Δ14C of the organic matters. As a result, the δ13C values of particulate organic matters in river water showed a different range from -26.3 ‰ to -24.0 ‰ in the Kuzuryu River and -27.0 ‰ to -26.1 ‰ in the Hino River. The Δ14C values were -168 ‰ to -87 ‰ in the Kuzuryu River and -209 ‰ to -143 ‰ in the Hino River, revealing that the particulates in the Kuzuryu River is apparently composed of new organic matters. In addition, δ13C and Δ14C against the concentration of particulate organic matters were plotted in different regions on the chart, but a correlation was observed with the river water level. From these findings, it is considered that the difference in carbon isotope compositions between the two rivers is due to be the result of reflecting the difference in the characteristics of organic matters supplied from each basin to the main river and the difference in runoff behavior due to rainfall. 有機物の炭素同位体組織(δ13C、Δ14C)は、水圏環境における有機物の動態調査に有効なトレーナーである。本研究では、福井県と岐阜県に位置する九頭竜川本流と主要な支流の日野川下流域のそれぞれ1地点で2010年6月から10月の期間に4回、採取した河川水85~141Lから連続遠心機を用いて懸濁粒子を分離し、有機物のδ13CとΔ14Cを測定した。その結果、河川水の懸濁態有機物のδ13C値は、九頭竜川で-26.3‰%から-24.0‰、日野川では-27.0‰から-26.1‰と異なる範囲を示した。Δ14C値は九頭竜川で-168‰から-87‰、日野川で-209‰から-143‰と九頭竜川のほうが見かけ上、新しい有機物で構成されていることが明らかになった。また、懸濁態有機物濃度に対するδ13CとΔ14Cは異なる領域にプロットされるが、河川水位とは相関性が認められた。そのため、両河川での炭素同位体組成の違いは、各領域から河川へ供給される有機物の特徴の違いと降雨による流出挙動の違いが反映した結果と考えられる。(著者)Additional details
