Non-selectivity of C-H bond rupture by γ-radiolysis of 3-methylpentane glass

Description

We have recently proved that the composition of the dimer products formed in radiated solid branch alkanes can be analysed by means of capillary gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The results are summarized for 3 MP glass irradiated at 38 and 164 kGy, relative yields (%) are also reported for a liquid sample irradiated at 40 kGy. The yields are expressed in G values: number of molecules produced by 100 eV of absorbed energy. The analytical procedure has been described. By comparison with library mass spectra, only the 3,8-dimethyl decane (38DMC10) is identified. Most of the heavy products (C12) are dimer isomers (Csub(12s)), unsaturated heavy products (Csub(12u)) are secondary products. The relative probability of the C-H bond rupture is discussed. (author)
