First operational experience and radioactivity in the SINQ cooling system

Description

The Spallation Neutron Source SINQ is designed for 1 MW of beam power on target, although at present it is only running at 60% of this value. There are, however, prospects to increase the beam power and it would be difficult to retrofit for the higher power level in some areas. Among those are the bulk target shield and the cooling loops. For this reason those systems have been laid out for a full megawatt of heat removal capability, with some safety margin to account for uncertainties. This safety margin is contained in the engineered layout. Therefore the actual ratings given for the cooling loops add up to ∼1 MW. (author)
