Longitudinal polarization measurements on direct muons produced in proton-nucleus collisions

Description

The longitudinal polarization of direct μ+-mesons, produced by 70 GeV protons and having transverse momentum P(transv.) = 2.8 GeV/c, has been measured. On the basis of these measurements as well as of similar ones made for P(transv.) = 2.0 GeV/c, a value of the polarization of -(0.85 +- 0.36) has been obtained. This indicates production of direct leptons due to weak interactions. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Die longitudinale Polarisation direkter, durch 70 GeV Protonen erzeugter μ+-Mesonen mit dem Querimpuls P(transv.) = 2,8 GeV wurde gemessen. Auf der Basis dieser Messungen und aehnlicher Messungen fuer P(transv.) = 2,0 GeV/c erhielt man einen Wert von -(0,85 +- 0,36) fuer die Polarisation, was eine Produktion direkter Leptonen durch schwache Wechselwirkungen vermuten laesst.
