Melancholy in Greifswald. What will become of the nuclear power stations of the former GDR?

In December 1990, Klaus Toepfer, then Environmental Minister ended 30 years of nuclear energy utilisation in the GDR. The former plants at Greifswald/Lubmin and Rheinsberg are now melancholic sites to see. Plant dismantling has already begun and should be finished by 2009. Chances that the know-how acquired in the operation will become a major export article are limited. There are barely any hopes for new labour-intensive activities left. This is a place where people appear to have lost hope for the future. (orig./RHM)
Abstract (German)
Im Dezember 1990 beendete der damalige Umweltminister Toepfer 30 Jahre Kernenergienutzung in der DDR. An den Standorten Greifswald/Lubmin und Rheinsberg herrscht heute Tristesse. Der Rueckbau der Anlagen hat begonnen, 2009 soll er beendet sein. Die Chancen, das dabei zu erwerbende Know-how zum Exportschlager zu machen, sind begrenzt. Was dereinst aus den Standorten wird, ist ungewiss. Hoffnungen auf neue beschaeftigungsintensive Aktivitaeten haben sich weitgehend zerschlagen. Besuch an einem Ort, an dem der Zukunftsglaube abhanden gekommen zu sein scheint. (orig.)Additional details
