Transmutation method for radioactive waste utilizing nuclear fusion

Description

Fission products and TRU as radioactive wastes are disposed to the periphery of a gas target for muon-catalyzed fusion reaction in the order of first fission products, TRU and second fission products. 14 MeV neutrons generated upon nuclear fusion transmute the first fission products by (n, 2n) reaction at first. Then, neutrons leaked from the first fission product cell transmute TRU by nuclear fusion (n, f). The neutrons leaked from a TRU cell are thermalized by D2O moderators, and the thermalized neutrons further transmute the second fission products by neutron capturing reaction (n, γ). In particular, since thermal energy generated by nuclear fusion of TRU is converted to an electric energy, and it is used as an electric energy source for a deuteron accelerator, self-contained performance is attained with no requirement for an external energy.
