The use of trans-stilbene scintillators for the measurement of dose in γ-n mixed fields

Description
The possibility of employing a trans-stilbene crystal scintillator in the dosimetry of γ-n mixed fields has been studied. By a suitable linear combination of the slow and fast components of the light pulse, a response can be obtained to protons and to γ-rays, that makes feasible the use of the scintillator for the measurement of the equivalent dose in γ-n mixed field. The energy range that can be covered is from 0.1 up to 5+6 MeV for γ-rays and from 0.1 up to 12+14 MeV for neutrons. It must be noticed that, in mixed radiation field where the contribution of the neutrons to equivalent dose is not much greater than that one of γ-rays, the slow component of light pulse can be assumed as a measure of the absorbed dose. Then, under this conditions, the measurement of the quality factor of the field can be obtained with sufficiently high accuracy
