Recovery and separation of plutonium and americium from assorted aqueous acidic, alkaline and organic laboratory waste

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Radiochemistry Div.

Description

Complete recovery and separation of plutonium and americium from assorted non-recoverable aqueous acidic and alkaline, and organic waste solutions (0.5 g Pu/17 l) originating from solvent extraction studies containing various organic ligands and moderate concentrations of SO42-, NO3-, Cl- and F-anions was achieved by extracting with Truex solvent from ∼ 3M HNO3. More than 99% plutonium was stripped from the loaded organic phase using 0.5M Na2CO3. Aqueous raffinate (∼2Ol) containing 1.97 mg 239Pu + 0.053 μg 241Am/l was further passed through a small 1g CAC (CMPO adsorbed chromosorb) column where 241Am was quantitatively separated leading to almost α-free waste solution.
